Ray Im is a Korean-born American lens-based artist and ceramist in Michigan, US. He received his BFA in Studio Art - Photography at Baylor University in Waco, TX. He is currently an MFA candidate of the ceramics at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Although Im began his career in digital film-making, he switched to photography and ceramics in 2014.
His interest in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional surfaces stands from the textural and linear quality they both provide. Through his images and objects, Im focuses on spatial division through the utilization of depth of field and variation of planes. In his three-dimensional ceramic works, he creates the objects for his photography which centered on the relationship between volume and the formal lines of a three-dimensional object.
In his most recent work, Relocation, Im combines both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works to create the installation and investigates the continuous exchange between different dimensional world.
